Long rides don't have to be a pain in the butt

When it comes to saddles there seems to be a belief that the only way to find a comfy saddle is to waste hundreds of dollars trying different saddles and throwing or giving away the ones that just aren't comfortable. Believe it or not saddle comfort isn't black magic it is in fact an exact science. Hidden within our nether regions are two bony prominences which are part of our pelvis, these tend to be known in the industry as 'sit bones'. These bones were specifically placed there by God for the sole purpose of riding bikes. By focusing the majority of body weight on to these bones a rider will be more comfortable and experience little to no numbness of their 'special place'. The reason why a lot of riders experience pain or numbness on long ride is two fold. First these divine weight bearing bones can become sensitive from long periods of disuse. Secondly a poorly fitted saddle that does not put correct pressure on the sit bones will put excess load on soft tissue surrounding the sit bones. This pressure can pinch off nerves and blood vessels and cause the dreaded dingle tingle. The best and only way around this is to ride a good quality saddle that has been fitted correctly. Bontrager offer a wide range of saddle types from budget comfort saddles to carbon railed, fibre shell race saddles. The biggest advantage of the Bontrager line up is that each saddle model comes in three widths depending on how wide your hips are. This is so the custom curvature will match your sit bones perfectly. They also offer WSD saddles specifically moulded for the ladies among us.
